What is SDA? (SDA)

Understanding NDIS housing support might seem tricky, but we’re here to simplify it for you, focusing on two key terms: Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA) and Supported Independent Living (SIL). They sound similar but serve different needs for people with disabilities.

SDA is all about the place you live. It’s special housing designed for those who need extra help because of severe disabilities. This includes homes with features like ramps for wheelchairs, bathrooms made just for you and even home automation to make life easier.

There are four design categories for SDA homes each built to suit different needs:

  1. Improved Liveability,
  2. Fully Accessible,
  3. Robust, and
  4. High Physical Support

But remember, SDA is for people who really need these special setups, and not everyone with an NDIS plan will qualify.

SIL is more about the help you get in your daily life. It’s the support for doing everyday things, from getting ready in the morning to cooking meals, aiming to help you live as independently as possible.

We know this can be a lot to take in, and even people who’ve been around the NDIS for a while can find it confusing. But understanding the difference between SDA and SIL helps you see how both can help make life better, whether it’s finding the right home or getting the support you need to live your day-to-day life.

Our Mission

Who is Eligible for SDA

Eligibility for SDA is determined based on extreme functional impairment, very high support needs, and meeting specific NDIS funding criteria. Funding for SDA is directed to providers to assist with building and maintenance costs, while participants contribute towards rent and daily living expenses.

FAQs

What is SDA?

Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA) refers to housing solutions specifically designed for individuals with significant functional impairments or high support needs, enabling more independent living.

SDA is for individuals with severe and permanent disabilities that greatly limit daily activities. Eligibility requires a need for specialised housing, assessed by healthcare professionals or disability support providers. Funding approval, often through the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS), is also necessary.

Eligibility for SDA is determined through the NDIS and is intended for participants with extreme functional impairment or those who have very high support needs. The specific criteria and the process are outlined in detail by the NDIS

You can complete an NDIS assessment to determine whether you’re eligible for SDA or other housing support.

Application is through the NDIS, involving an eligibility assessment and submission of necessary documentation.

  1. Assessment: Get assessed by healthcare professionals or disability support providers to confirm your eligibility.
  2. NDIS plan: If you’re an NDIS participant, discuss your SDA needs with your planner.
  3. New NDIS application: If not, apply for the NDIS, emphasising your need for SDA.
  4. Request for SDA: Discuss SDA funding with your NDIS planner or LAC.
  5. Review and appeals: If needed, seek a review or appeal through the NDIS process.
  6. Engage with providers: Work with SDA providers to find suitable accommodation.
  7. Sign agreements: Finalise agreements with your chosen provider.
  8. Move-in: Once everything is set, move into your SDA accommodation.

New Growth Care Group can assist you with this process, helping to determine your eligibility and facilitate the application for SDA. We can also assist in gathering the necessary documentation and navigating through the required steps

SDA accommodation is not completely free. While the NDIS may provide funding towards the costs associated with SDA, participants are generally required to contribute to their daily living expenses, including rent, from their own income or other supports.

Types of SDA include modified apartments, houses, and group homes, designed to enhance safety and accessibility.

The types of SDA available to each participant are categorised based on physical accessibility and include options like Improved Liveability, Fully Accessible, Robust, and High Physical Support. Each category is designed to meet different levels of need and support for residents.

SDA is primarily designed to support individuals with high needs; however, the arrangements can accommodate families if the eligible individual’s support needs warrant it. The main focus of SDA funding is on the individual’s needs, but living arrangements can be adapted to also consider family situations

Yes, you have the freedom to choose your accommodation with SDA funding, provided it aligns with your disability-related requirements and the guidelines set by the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS).

SDA funding is provided through the NDIS and is allocated to eligible participants to help cover the costs associated with specialist disability accommodation. This funding is intended for the physical dwelling and does not cover everyday living expenses, personal care, or support services.
