When Melbourne turns on a perfect 27-degree day, there’s only one thing to do… grab an ice cream.

And at New Growth Care Group, we decided to take that one step further.

We surprised our Briggs Street Supported Independent Living (SIL) residents with their very own ice cream truck, rolling right up to the front door. Staff and residents poured outside with huge smiles, ready to soak up the sunshine, enjoy a cone (or two), and share some much-needed laughter together.

Creating Moments That Feel Like Home

Supported Independent Living isn’t just about providing safe accommodation and quality disability support.
It’s about creating a life that feels warm, connected, and full of genuine experiences.

Moments like this, sunshine, music from the ice cream van, everyone choosing their favourite flavour and staff joining in the fun, remind us why we do what we do. For our residents, these little surprises build connection, confidence, and a real sense of belonging within their home.

Why Experiences Matter in Supported Independent Living

At New Growth Group, we believe that SIL in Melbourne should offer more than routines and appointments. It should offer:

  • Community – opportunities to socialise and feel part of something bigger
  • Joy – small moments that brighten the day
  • Choice – like picking your favourite ice cream on a warm afternoon
  • Connection – meaningful time spent with staff who truly care

Events like this help strengthen relationships within the house, create shared memories, and make day-to-day living feel more fun, engaging, and personalised.

The Briggs Street team and residents spent the afternoon outside together, enjoying the warm weather, chatting, laughing, and celebrating how far the home has come since opening. For many of our residents, this was a highlight of their week, not because of the ice cream itself, but because of the genuine connection behind the moment.

These experiences are what we love creating. They’re the heartbeat of our approach to disability support.
